1. Our boundary.

Amber Horizon Lab is a casino systems and supplier publication. It does not offer gambling, games, odds, accounts, bonuses, affiliate wagering, deposits, withdrawals or payments. We do not encourage gambling or provide gambling strategy. The 18+ gate reflects the adult-only context of the environments discussed.

Responsible-gambling information belongs on a casino design and technology resource because physical layouts, displays, service systems and operating decisions can affect time awareness, visibility of support, access to breaks, wayfinding and the dignity of people seeking help.

2. Recognising possible gambling harm.

Harm does not depend on a particular dollar amount or frequency. It can exist whenever gambling negatively affects a person or those around them. Possible signs include:

  • spending more money or time than intended, or repeatedly trying to recover losses;
  • borrowing, selling possessions, missing bills or hiding financial activity;
  • feeling restless, distressed, ashamed or preoccupied when trying to stop;
  • concealing gambling or arguing with family and friends about it;
  • difficulty sleeping, concentrating or meeting work, study or caring responsibilities;
  • using gambling to escape distress, loneliness or other problems;
  • thoughts of self-harm, hopelessness or feeling that there is no way out.

This list is not a diagnosis. You do not need to wait for a crisis or meet every sign before contacting a counsellor. Family members and friends can also seek confidential advice.

3. Practical steps that can help.

A qualified gambling counsellor can help tailor a plan. Immediate options may include:

  1. Pause and leave the gambling environment. Move to a safe, non-gambling place and contact someone you trust.
  2. Reduce access to money. Speak with your bank about available gambling blocks or limits and consider asking a trusted person for temporary support with finances.
  3. Use self-exclusion. Contact the venue and the relevant state or territory program for land-based gambling. For licensed online and phone wagering, consider BetStop.
  4. Remove prompts. Unsubscribe from marketing, delete gambling apps and turn off relevant notifications.
  5. Get specialist support. Call 1800 858 858 or use Gambling Help Online for counselling and local service referral.
  6. Address urgent needs. Ask a counsellor about financial counselling, relationship support and other services; call 000 if anyone is in immediate danger.

There is no shame in asking early. Support is appropriate whether you are unsure, experiencing severe harm, trying to maintain a change, or worried about another person.

4. Understand self-exclusion coverage.

BetStop—the National Self-Exclusion Register™ covers Australian licensed online and phone wagering providers. The Australian Communications and Media Authority states that a person can register for a period from three months up to a lifetime.

BetStop does not replace land-based casino or state and territory self-exclusion arrangements. If you want exclusion from a physical casino, club, hotel or other venue, contact the venue or the relevant local gambling-help service. People may need more than one exclusion process because programs have different coverage.

A counsellor at Gambling Help Online or the national helpline can help identify appropriate options. Always check the official program’s current scope, terms and privacy information before registration.

5. If you are worried about someone.

Choose a private, calm moment. Describe specific changes you have noticed without labelling or blaming the person. Listen, acknowledge that change can be difficult and offer to contact a service together. Avoid lending money for gambling or taking over all financial consequences without advice, as this can create additional risk.

Set boundaries that protect your own finances and wellbeing. Keep important accounts and documents secure where needed. You can call the national gambling helpline yourself for guidance, even if the person who gambles is not ready to seek help. If you fear violence, coercion, self-harm or immediate danger, prioritise safety and contact appropriate emergency or specialist services.

6. Responsible principles for interior teams.

Interior design cannot by itself prevent gambling harm, and regulatory obligations must be interpreted by qualified advisers. It can, however, support a safer operating environment. Project teams can discuss:

  • clear, dignified and accessible routes to exits, amenities and non-gaming areas;
  • visible, readable help and self-exclusion information at appropriate locations;
  • access to calm break spaces and, where feasible, daylight or reliable time cues;
  • lighting and signage that support orientation rather than confusion;
  • acoustic conditions that allow private conversations with staff or support services;
  • furniture layouts that do not obstruct circulation, supervision or assistance;
  • avoiding child-oriented imagery and visual language that glamorises financial risk;
  • consultation with people who have lived experience of gambling harm.

These are discussion prompts, not a checklist of legal compliance. Venue operators must follow applicable laws, licence conditions, codes and regulator directions in their state or territory.
